How the results are calculated

The tile calculator tells you how many pieces to buy for a floor or a wall. The formula is area minus openings, divided by one tile, times 1 plus waste, then round the piece count up. Tile area comes from width and height in centimeters unless you type a custom area in m². A straight layout adds nothing, a diagonal adds 5 waste points, herringbone adds 10. Packs round up: tiles divided by tiles per box.

In an 18 m² living room a 60×60 cm tile is 0.36 m², so you start near 50 pieces. Ten percent for cuts at walls and a doorway rounds up to 56. A 7.2 m² bath at 30×60 cm and 12% waste is 45 pieces, because a small room eats more cuts at the tub and drain. A long 20×120 cm format on 24 m² at 15% with 8 tiles per box is 115 tiles, 15 full boxes.

Type the area to tile, then tile width and height in cm. Waste, openings, layout, pack size, and price sit in the advanced fields and can stay empty. A comma and a period are the same, so 7.2 and 7,2 are one area. If you already know the tile area with grout, type that custom tile area instead of the centimeter sides.

Stores sell whole tiles and whole boxes. 44.2 pieces means at least 45, and with eight in a box you still buy full packs. A large format and herringbone need more waste than a straight 5-10% layout. You do not subtract 2 mm grout lines: 8-12% waste usually covers them.

Twenty square meters at 60×60 cm and 10% waste is 62 pieces. Twelve square meters at the same size and 10% is 37. Type 18, 60, and 60, set 10%, and match 56 on the first card.

How to use this calculator

  1. Type the area to tile in m², for example 18 for a living room or 7.2 for a bath.
  2. Enter one tile width and height in centimeters, for example 60 and 60. Those two sides stay in cm even when the header is US. Custom tile area and the room area follow the header unit.

This is a typical case for a straight layout in a living room or open-plan area. Even with large tiles, it is worth adding waste because cuts along walls and transitions quickly consume extra pieces.

In small rooms, waste is often proportionally higher than in large rooms because more pieces need to be adjusted around corners, niches, and drains.

Long-format tiles usually require a bigger margin for cuts and selection. In real purchasing, the final decision is based on full boxes rather than individual pieces.

One tile is 0.36 m². 20 / 0.36 ≈ 55.56, plus 10% waste is about 61.1, so 62 pieces after rounding up.

How many tiles for 18 m² at 60×60 cm and 10% waste?

56 pieces, as on the first card. Without waste you would be near 50; cuts add the rest.

What waste percent should I add?

A straight layout often uses 5-10%. Diagonal, herringbone, niches, and large formats sit closer to 10-15%. The layout list adds 5 or 10 points on top of the base waste.

How many 30×60 cm tiles for 7.2 m² at 12%?

45 pieces. A small bath usually wastes a higher percent because more cuts sit at corners and the drain.

How many boxes for 24 m², 20×120 cm, 15%, and 8 per box?

115 tiles, which is 15 full boxes. You buy packs, not a fraction of a tile.

Do I subtract 2 mm grout from the area?

Not in this formula. You count pieces from tile area and waste. Grout shaves a fraction, and the store still sells whole tiles.

How many 60×60 cm tiles for 12 m² at 10% waste?

12 / 0.36 = 33.33, plus 10% is 36.67, so 37 pieces. Count boxes from 37, not from 33.

Where do I count adhesive after the tile count?

On the tile adhesive page. Area without tiles is on floor area: 5 by 4 m is 20 m².

Do walls and floors use the same formula?

Yes: area divided by one tile plus waste. On a wall you more often deduct openings and expect more cuts.

Can I buy 44 pieces when the result is 44.2?

Round up. 44.2 is at least 45, and with boxes you often take one more full pack.
