How the results are calculated

Tiles = ceil((area − openings) ÷ tile area × (1 + waste/100)). Tile area comes from width × height unless a custom tile area is given. Layout adds extra waste points on top of the base waste %. Packs = ceil(tiles ÷ tiles per pack).

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the total surface area you want to tile.
  2. Add the dimensions of one tile or its effective area with grout, depending on the calculator fields.
  3. Include a cutting and waste allowance — 5-10% is often enough for a straight layout, while diagonal layouts usually need 10-15%.
  4. If tiles are sold in boxes, compare the result with the number of pieces per pack and buy full packs.

Example scenarios

Example 1 — Living room with 60 × 60 cm tiles

  • Area: 18 m²
  • Tile: 60 × 60 cm
  • Waste: 10%

You need 56 tiles

This is a typical case for a straight layout in a living room or open-plan area. Even with large tiles, it is worth adding waste because cuts along walls and transitions quickly consume extra pieces.

Example 2 — Bathroom with 30 × 60 cm tiles

  • Area: 7.2 m²
  • Tile: 30 × 60 cm
  • Waste: 12%

You need 45 tiles

In small rooms, waste is often proportionally higher than in large rooms because more pieces need to be adjusted around corners, niches, and drains.

Example 3 — Terrace or long area with 20 × 120 cm tiles

  • Area: 24 m²
  • Tile: 20 × 120 cm
  • Waste: 15%
  • 8 tiles per box

You need 115 tiles
That equals 15 full boxes

Long-format tiles usually require a bigger margin for cuts and selection. In real purchasing, the final decision is based on full boxes rather than individual pieces.

FAQ

How much extra should I add when buying tiles?

For a straight layout, 5-10% is often enough. If you install tiles diagonally, in a herringbone pattern, or in a room with many corners and niches, 10-15% is usually safer.

Do I need to calculate grout area separately?

Usually not. In practice, the most important thing is the real tile format and an allowance for cuts. If the calculator uses an “effective tile area with grout” field, use that value directly.

Why does the result need to be rounded up?

Because you cannot buy a fraction of a tile. Even if the raw calculation gives 44.2 pieces, in practice you need at least 45 tiles, and often a full box.

Is the calculation the same for walls and floors?

Mathematically yes — you still divide the total covered area by the area of one tile. The practical difference is that walls usually involve more niches, outlets, and detailed cuts.

Is it worth buying a few more tiles than the calculator shows?

Yes, especially if the collection may disappear from the market later. One or two spare tiles — or even one extra box — can save a repair job in the future.

Which matters more: tile count or box count?

Both matter during planning, but box count is more important for purchasing. It tells you how much you actually need to order and pay for.

Is waste higher with large-format tiles?

Often yes. Large and long tiles look modern, but in more difficult layouts they usually create more waste at edges, thresholds, and wall transitions.
