How the results are calculated

The stair calculator counts one riser height. The formula is total rise divided by the number of steps. A comfortable range is usually about 15-20 cm. When you type tread depth, the calculator also shows the Blondel check 2h+s, a comfort sketch of the flight.

A 2.8 m story and 16 steps is 17.50 cm, a typical house flight. At 3.0 m and 17 steps you get 17.65 cm. A lower 2.65 m ceiling and 15 steps is 17.67 cm. Fifteen steps on 2.8 m would be 18.67 cm, tighter at the knee; seventeen on 2.8 m would be 16.47 cm.

Type total rise in the header unit, for example 2.8, and the step count. Tread depth in centimeters is optional. A comma and a period are the same rise. The result is in centimeters even though rise is in meters.

A square landing is the 3-4-5 ratio page. Driveway slope next door is a percent, not a riser. Concrete for 1.2×0.3×0.18 m treads lives on concrete volume.

A tall riser wears you out on daily trips; a short one lengthens the flight and eats floor. Change the count and compare 17.50 with 16.47 or 18.67 at the same 2.8 m. The result is a quotient, not a building-code stamp.
