How much paint you need

Before you buy paint, calculate how many liters you need. What matters is wall area, the coverage on the can, and the number of coats.

The idea in brief

Take the wall area, divide by the coverage on the label, and multiply by the number of coats.

At 12 m²/L, one liter covers about 12 m² in a single coat. Two coats need twice the paint. Round cans up: stores sell whole packs, and some paint stays on the tools.

On this page: 12 m²/L means 12 square meters per liter: how much surface one liter should cover in a single coat. L means liters. A factor of 1.15 or 1.25 multiplies use when the surface is more absorbent.

Start with the can, not a guess

Coverage on the label is usually square meters per liter, such as 12 m²/L. That is not “12 liters per meter”. One liter should cover about 12 m² in a single coat if the surface behaves the way the maker assumed.

Measure the walls or take the area from a plan. Subtract windows and doors if you are not painting those frames. Then decide on one coat or two. Fresh plaster or a highly absorbent wall often uses more than the label promises.

The arithmetic

Liters = (area minus openings) divided by coverage, times coats, times a surface factor. Then round up to full cans, because stores sell whole cans.

Card example: 39.6 m², 12 m² per liter, two coats, a normal surface. 39.6 / 12 × 2 = 6.6 L. With 2.5 L cans you buy three. A 12 m² ceiling at 14 m²/L and one coat is about 0.86 L, so a small can is often enough if you are not painting the walls in the same color.

A worked example

One-room example

You have 39.6 m² of wall, the can says 12 m²/L, and you paint twice.

  1. 39.6 divided by 12 is 3.3 L for one coat.
  2. Two coats: 6.6 L.
  3. A 2.5 L can: buy three, because 6.6 does not split evenly.

That is the same result as the paint calculator card.

What the card cannot see

The calculator does not know how absorbent your plaster is, or that the roller will take half a liter on the first load. The surface factor is a way to add reserve, not a lab test. If the color is mixed in store, buy the extra can from the same batch, so the next tin does not shift shade.

  • On fresh plaster you checked the 1.15 or 1.25 variant.
  • The can count is rounded up. At 6.6 L and a 2.5 L can that is three cans, not two.
  • For store-tinted color, buy one batch and one spare can so the shade stays the same.

How much paint for 40 m² at 10 m²/L and two coats?

8 L on a normal surface. With a 1.15 factor you get 9.2 L, four 2.5 L cans.

Should I subtract windows before I buy?

Yes, if you are not painting them. 50 minus 8 m² at 8 m²/L and one coat is 5.25 L, not 6.25 L from the full 50.

What does 12 m²/L on the label mean?

Square meters per liter. One liter covers about 12 m² in one coat, not 12 liters per meter.

If I need 2.1 cans, do I buy 2?

Round up. Paint left on the roller and touch-ups around radiators use a fraction of a can.
