How it works

Prism volume is base area times the height between the bases. The first card example, 24 and 10, is 240.00. A pyramid with the same numbers would divide by three and give 80. This page does not divide. Base area is not an edge: side 24 on a square is area 576, not 24.

A cube of edge 6 has volume 216. This calculator gives 216 only when you type base area 36 and h = 6, not when you type 6 and 6. A cylinder inserts π itself. There is no π here: turn a circle into base area on the circle page, then paste it here. A thin slab 100 and 2 gives 200.00.

The calculator does not run when area or height is missing. Switching to inches relabels the result as in³ and does not convert a typed 24.

Height is perpendicular between the bases, not a slanted lateral edge. The base can be a triangle, a hexagon, anything: the calculator asks for area, not a shape.

At 36 and 5 you get 180.00. At 12 and 12 you get 144.00. At 8 and 8 you get 64.00. At 15 and 6 you get 90.00. That is still base area times h, not a³ and not one third of a pyramid. V: Volume.

How to use

  1. Find the base area on the triangle, rectangle, or another flat page.
  2. Type that area as base area in cm² or in² from the unit-switch label.
  3. Type prism height h in cm or inches, the distance between the bases.
  4. Click Calculate. The result uses two decimal places and cm³ or in³.
  5. The 24 and 10 example is 240.00. That is not 80 from a pyramid ⅓×24×10 and not 1000 from a cube 10³.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a cube a³?

No. A cube takes one edge. Here you type area and height. 10³ = 1000 on the cube page. 24 and 10 here is 240.00.

Why do 24 and 10 give 240, not 80?

Because there is no one third. A pyramid 24 times 10 / 3 is 80. The prism keeps 240.00.

Should I type side 24 instead of area?

No. Base area is cm². Side 24 on a square is area 576. Typing 24 as area at h = 10 gives 240 only when 24 is already an area.

What if I leave h empty?

Nothing is computed. Type height or load 24 and 10. Empty h does not become a slab of volume equal to the area.

Is cylinder πr²h here?

No. π does not enter. Turn a circle into base area on the circle card, then paste it here.

Can I mix centimeters and inches?

Not in one run. Base area in cm² when h is in cm, or in² when h is in inches. The switch changes the label and does not scale numbers.

Must the base be a rectangle?

No. A triangle, a hexagon, anything. The calculator does not ask for a shape. It asks for area.

Why do 100 and 2 give 200.00?

To show a slab. The product 200 is legal. The formula does not need h close to a side, which is not even an input.

Is a slanted lateral edge h?

No. h sits between the bases and is perpendicular to them. A slanted edge is longer and spoils 240.00.

Do 36 and 6 give cube 216?

Yes, if 36 really is the area of a square of side 6. Typing 6 and 6 gives only 36, not 216.
