Focus time after interruptions

The calculator uses the numbers you enter: focus stretches, interruptions, and unplanned meetings. 8 hours minus 4.8 of recovery and 2 hours of meetings is 6.8 hours short. The hourly rate sits in the grid.

The calculator does not measure productivity and does not read the calendar. Meetings: Meeting hours.

Input data

Enter focus stretches, interruptions, recovery minutes, and unplanned meetings. You can leave the hourly rate blank.

Optional context

This field is optional. An hourly rate shows the value of recovery and unplanned-meeting hours in the grid. A blank field skips that context and does not change the main result.

How it works

The calculator counts planned hours as stretches times minutes, then divides by 60. Separately it multiplies stretches by interruptions and recovery minutes. It adds unplanned meetings. It subtracts that sum from the plan. 8 × 60 ÷ 60 = 8. 8 × 3 × 12 ÷ 60 = 4.8. 120 ÷ 60 = 2. 8 − 4.8 − 2 = 1.2. The shortfall versus the plan is 6.8 hours.

The main result comes from those five numbers. The share of the plan sits in the grid. An hourly rate is optional and does not change the main result.

Second example: 12 − 1.6 − 0.3 = 10.1 versus 12, which is 1.9 hours short. Third: the loss exceeds the plan, so 0 remains versus 4, which is 4 hours short.

The calculator does not measure productivity and does not read the calendar. A comma in 12.5 is read the same way as a period.

Formula

Result = plan − stretches × interruptions × recovery ÷ 60 − meetings ÷ 60. At 8, 60, 3, 12 and 120: 8 − 4.8 − 2 = 1.2, which is 6.8 hours short.

What these numbers mean

8 minus 4.8 and 2 is 6.8 hours short.

focus time
The plan minus recovery minus unplanned meetings. At 8, 4.8 and 2 that leaves 1.2, which is 6.8 hours short.
interruptions
Stretches times interruptions times recovery minutes, then over 60. In the first example that is 4.8 hours.
hourly rate
The value of recovery and meeting hours. It sits in the grid and does not change the shortfall versus the plan.

How to use

  1. Enter 8 stretches of 60 minutes.
  2. Add 3 interruptions, 12 recovery minutes, and 120 meeting minutes.
  3. Click Calculate. The result is 6.8 hours short.
  4. Second example: 12, 60, 1, 8 and 20 is 1.9 hours short. Third: 4, 60, 6, 20 and 450 is 4 hours short.
  5. You can skip the hourly rate. When you fill it, it appears in the grid and does not change the main result.

Examples

Example 1

  • stretches 8
  • stretch 60 min
  • interruptions 3
  • recovery 12 min
  • unplanned 120 min

6.8 hours short

8 × 3 × 12 ÷ 60 = 4.8. 120 ÷ 60 = 2. 8 − 4.8 − 2 = 1.2. The shortfall versus 8 is 6.8 hours.

Example 2

  • stretches 12
  • stretch 60 min
  • interruptions 1
  • recovery 8 min
  • unplanned 20 min

1.9 hours short

12 × 1 × 8 ÷ 60 = 1.6. 20 ÷ 60 = 0.3. 12 − 1.6 − 0.3 = 10.1. The shortfall versus 12 is 1.9 hours.

Example 3

  • stretches 4
  • stretch 60 min
  • interruptions 6
  • recovery 20 min
  • unplanned 450 min

4 hours short

4 × 6 × 20 ÷ 60 = 8. 450 ÷ 60 = 7.5. 4 − 8 − 7.5 becomes 0. The shortfall versus 4 is 4 hours.

How is the result calculated?

Result = plan − stretches × interruptions × recovery ÷ 60 − meetings ÷ 60. At 8, 60, 3, 12 and 120 the shortfall is 6.8 hours.

What is the second example?

12 − 1.6 − 0.3 is 1.9 hours short.

What is the third example?

The loss exceeds the plan, so 0 remains versus 4, which is 4 hours short.

What does the calculator not do?

The calculator does not measure productivity and does not read the calendar. The hourly rate is optional.

Do all fields enter the main result?

No. The main result comes from stretches, minutes, interruptions, recovery, and meetings. The rate is optional.

What do focus, interruptions, and the rate mean?

Focus is the plan minus recovery minus meetings. Interruptions enter the recovery minutes. The rate sits in the grid.

Does a comma in 12.5 work?

Yes. 12.5 and 12,5 are read the same way.
