How it works

The steps to miles calculator multiplies step count by stride length. 10000 steps at 76 cm gives about 7.60 km, because 10000 × 0.76 m = 7600 m. On US that same walk is about 4.72 miles. If stride is blank, walking stride is 0.415 times height. If height is blank too, metric uses 76 cm and US uses 30 inches, about 0.76 m.

The calorie sketch is mass in kilograms times distance in kilometers times 0.5. That is a rough 0.5 kcal per kg per km of walking, not running and not cycling. 70 kg on 7.60 km gives 266 kcal. 80 kg on 3.50 km gives 140 kcal. Blank mass hides the kcal card and adds a note that mass is needed. A typed mass must be greater than zero.

The unit header really works here. On US you enter height and stride in inches, mass in pounds, and distance comes out in miles. On metric you use centimeters, kilograms, and kilometers. A comma and a dot are the same number. Header currency does not multiply 266 kcal by a rate and does not turn steps into dollars.

This is not a phone pedometer: we do not count steps from an accelerometer, we do not pair a watch, and we do not guess cadence. You type a count from your own counter or workout. Zero steps is an error. An empty step field computes nothing. The neighboring calories-walking page takes walking time and mass, not a step count, so it is a different formula.

How to use

  1. Enter a step count greater than zero. Leave stride blank if it should come from height or from the 76 cm default.
  2. Height is optional and is used only when stride is blank: then stride is 0.415 times height for walking.
  3. Enter mass when you want the calorie sketch. Blank mass hides the kcal card and leaves distance on the first card.
  4. On US in the header, type stride and height in inches and mass in pounds. Distance then comes out in miles, not kilometers.
  5. Click Calculate and read kilometers or miles. This is not a phone pedometer and does not count steps from a watch.

Formula

distance (m) = steps × stride (m)

Blank stride: 0.415 × height. Blank height: 0.76 m (metric) or 30 in (US). kcal = kg × km × 0.5. Blank mass: no kcal card. Steps > 0.

Examples

Example 1

  • 10000 steps
  • Stride 76 cm
  • Mass 70 kg

7.60 km and 266 kcal

10000 steps at 76 cm and 70 kg gives about 7.60 km (about 4.72 miles) and 266 kcal.

Example 2

  • 8000 steps
  • Blank stride
  • Height 170 cm
  • No mass

5.64 km, no kcal

8000 steps and height 170 cm gives about 5.64 km; without mass the kcal card hides.

Example 3

  • 5000 steps
  • Stride 70 cm
  • Mass 80 kg

3.50 km and 140 kcal

5000 steps at 70 cm and 80 kg gives about 3.50 km and 140 kcal.

Example 4

  • 12000 steps
  • Blank stride
  • Blank height
  • No mass

9.12 km, no kcal

12000 steps at the default 76 cm gives about 9.12 km and hides kcal.

Example 5

  • 10000 steps
  • Stride 80 cm
  • Mass 65 kg

8.00 km and 260 kcal

10000 steps at 80 cm and 65 kg gives about 8.00 km and 260 kcal.

Example 6

  • 6000 steps
  • Blank stride
  • Height 180 cm
  • Mass 90 kg

4.48 km and 202 kcal

6000 steps and height 180 cm at 90 kg gives about 4.48 km and 202 kcal.

Example 7

  • 15000 steps
  • Stride 75 cm
  • Mass 75 kg

11.25 km and 422 kcal

15000 steps at 75 cm and 75 kg gives about 11.25 km and 422 kcal.

Example 8

  • 3000 steps

3000 steps at 65 cm and 55 kg gives about 1.95 km and 54 kcal.

Frequently asked questions

What do 10000 steps at a 76 cm stride and 70 kg mass give?

Distance is 7.60 km, because 10000 × 0.76 m = 7600 m. The calorie sketch is 70 × 7.60 × 0.5 = 266. On US those 7600 m are about 4.72 miles.

Where does 5.64 km come from with 8000 steps and height 170 cm?

Blank stride uses 0.415 × 1.70 m = 0.7055 m. 8000 × 0.7055 m = 5.644 km, shown as 5.64 km. Without mass the kcal card is hidden.

Do 12000 steps with no height and no stride read my phone?

No. Metric fills 76 cm and US fills 30 inches. This is not a pedometer. The phone and watch do not send steps here.

Why does blank mass hide 266 kcal instead of filling 70 kg?

Without mass there is no kg × km × 0.5 product. The kcal card hides; distance stays. 70 kg appears only after you type it or click the example.

Does US convert 7.60 km into miles, or only append mi?

It converts. You enter stride and height in inches, mass in pounds, and distance in miles. 7600 m is about 4.72 mi, not 7.60 mi.

Does the dollar sign in the header multiply 266 kcal by a rate?

No. Calories are not money. The currency symbol does not change this page. 266 kcal stays 266 after you switch USD to PLN.

How does this 0.5 kcal/kg/km sketch differ from calories walking?

Here you multiply steps by stride, then by mass and 0.5. There you use walking time, not a step count. Different formula, different card.

Is zero steps treated like a blank field that fills 10000?

No. Zero is an error, because distance needs a positive count. A blank field also computes nothing and does not insert ten thousand from the example.

Why do 6000 steps at height 180 cm and 90 kg give 202 kcal, not 201?

Stride is 0.415 × 1.80 = 0.747 m. Distance is 4.482 km. 90 × 4.482 × 0.5 = 201.69, rounded to 202 kcal. The distance card shows 4.48 km.

Does a typed 80 cm stride beat a 170 cm height?

Yes. A filled stride wins. Height is used only when stride is blank. 10000 at 80 cm is 8.00 km, whatever the height field says.
