How it works

The calculator turns each date-and-time pair into clock minutes and subtracts the start from the end. 8:00 to 16:30 on the same day is 510 minutes, which is 8 hours 30 minutes.

When the dates differ, full days of 1,440 minutes are added. 22:00 on August 29 to 06:00 on August 30 is 8 hours. January 1 at 00:00 to January 3 at 12:00 is 2 days 12 hours.

An empty time is 00:00. The same dates and the same times give 0 minutes, not a full day.

When the end is earlier than the start, the calculator asks you to reverse the fields. It does not add a day automatically, because the date is already in the form.

The minutes are clock minutes, without a time zone and without daylight saving. A clock change at night does not shorten or lengthen the result.

Formula

minutes = (end − start) in clock minutes; days = floor(minutes / 1,440)

Decimal hours = minutes / 60. An empty time is 00:00. The calculator does not accept a negative span.

How to use

  1. Enter the start date and time, for example August 30, 2026, 08:00.
  2. Enter the end date and time, for example the same day, 16:30. The result is 8 hours 30 minutes.
  3. For an overnight span enter August 29 at 22:00 and August 30 at 06:00. The result is 8 hours.
  4. If you leave the time empty, the calculator uses 00:00. If the end is earlier than the start, reverse the fields.
