Can dogs eat this?

You pick species, weight and an amount from a list of 12 products. 10 kg and 20 g of milk chocolate stay low. 8 kg and 100 g of dark chocolate go high. Not a diagnosis and not 300 products.

This is not a clinic and not a reason to wait through vomiting or seizures. We do not compute pet BMI. For people: BMI calculator.

Result

Species, product, weight and grams. The result will show here.

How it works

Risk takes a dose from grams and weight, then compares it with the list threshold. 10 kg and 20 g of milk chocolate at 2.3 mg theobromine per gram give 4.6 mg/kg against a 20 threshold, so low. 8 kg and 100 g of dark at 5.5 mg/g give 68.8 mg/kg, so high. Grapes, raisins, lily and antifreeze go high as soon as grams are above 0.

Weight must be above 0 and at most 90 kg. Amount cannot be negative. The weight field is kilograms even if the header shows pounds.

Here you get a sketch from 12 products. BMI is for people, not dogs. Blood-alcohol is ethanol in a person, not a cat.

Thresholds are a sketch from published doses, not a clinic chart. Xylitol on the list is the pure substance, not gum of unknown makeup. Ibuprofen and paracetamol use a sketch of mg per gram of tablet.

The result shows risk, model dose and an action. The example button fills species, product, weight and grams.

Species is dog or cat. Dose is milligrams or grams per kilogram from your fields. List has 12 items, not 300. Action is watch, call, or go to a vet. A comma in 10.5 works. Do not put spaces in 1,000: type 1000.

How to use

  1. Pick dog and milk chocolate. Type weight 10 and 20 g.
  2. Click Calculate. Risk stays low, because 4.6 mg/kg is under 20.
  3. 8 kg and 100 g of dark go high. 12 kg and 30 g of grapes also go high, because grapes have no safe dose on this list.
  4. Lily is on the list for cats. For a dog the model says it has no dose, and that is not a green light.
  5. If the animal already looks unwell, go to a vet. Do not wait for this page.

Formula

dose_mg/kg = grams × mg_per_g / weight. ratio = dose / threshold. < 0.5 low, < 1 medium, else high. any=yes and grams > 0 → high.

Species, dose and list

10 kg and 20 g of milk chocolate stay low at a 20 mg/kg threshold.

Species
Dog or cat. Lily is on the list for cats. Grapes are on the list for dogs.
Dose
mg/kg or g/kg from your grams. 20 g and 10 kg at 2.3 mg/g is 4.6 mg/kg.
List
12 products. Not 300 and not a full ASPCA database either.
Action
Watch, call, or go to a vet. This does not replace an on-call desk.

Worked examples

Example 1

Low

A 10 kg dog and 20 g of milk chocolate. 4.6 mg/kg against 20.

Example 2

High

An 8 kg dog and 100 g of dark chocolate. 68.8 mg/kg.

Example 3

High

A 12 kg dog and 30 g of grapes. No safe dose on this list.

Suggested uses

  • You check 20 g of milk chocolate for a 10 kg dog before you dismiss “one square”. The model says low risk.
  • Same weight, dark chocolate: the dose goes up, because there is more theobromine.

Frequently asked questions

What risk from 10 kg and 20 g of milk chocolate?

Low. 20 × 2.3 / 10 = 4.6 mg/kg. The threshold for milk and dark is 20 mg theobromine per kg. Ratio 0.23 stays under 0.5.

What does high mean for grapes?

On this list grapes and raisins have no safe dose for a dog. 30 g at 12 kg is high at once. A sketch, not a clinic chart.

What about 8 kg and 100 g of dark?

High. 100 × 5.5 / 8 ≈ 68.8 mg/kg. Go to a vet now.

Is 12 products 300?

No. Twelve items: two chocolates, grapes, raisins, xylitol, onion, garlic, macadamia, lily, ibuprofen, paracetamol, antifreeze.

Are lilies safe for a dog?

The model has no dose for that pair. That is not a green light. Lily is on the list for cats.

Is 4.6 mg/kg a diagnosis?

No. It is a ratio from your grams and weight. The vet emergency line is outside this page.

Where do 2.3 and 5.5 mg/g come from?

A theobromine sketch: milk 2.3, dark 5.5. Another bar has different cocoa. You type the grams eaten.

How is this different from BMI?

Here you compute a dose from a list. BMI computes weight from height in a person.
