How it works
The zodiac sign here is the tropical Sun sign: a day-and-month range in the year cycle. In popular culture the twelve signs from Aries to Pisces became a calendar shorthand for temperament, far from a full chart with birth time and planets.
We do not use birth time, place or planetary positions. The result uses only day and month from the date, via one fixed tropical table. That keeps the answer repeatable and easy to verify.
Ranges are classic. Boundary dates always map to exactly one sign in the same table (for example 21 March → Aries, 20 April → Taurus). The full list of all 12 ranges is in the formula section below.
Walkthrough: 15 May falls in Taurus (20 Apr-20 May), so the result is Taurus and the earth element. 1 January belongs to Capricorn. 22 November opens the Sagittarius range.
Each sign has an element: fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) or water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). The element is a group label, not a character grade.
This is not the same as the Chinese zodiac (12-animal year cycle) or the birthstone (month). The moon phase describes the sky on a chosen date, not a birth Sun sign.
